Do you lack time for the important things? Me too, sometimes. But then I remember I have the same number of hours in a day as anyone else. If I don’t have time, I’m not making time. I am not arranging my life in a way that suits me.

We all have jobs and demands on us. Sometimes those demands really do make it hard to do the things that matter. Often though, there are things we can do. There are choices we can make.

What’s important to you?

What’s important to you? You personally? What do you love? What do you need?

I get really grouchy when I haven’t created anything in a while. Others might find that indulgent or strange. They may call it a false need or a luxury. For me, it’s not. I need to create. Nothing is right until I’ve done enough of that. When I have starved myself for an extended period I become difficult to know. Ask my loved ones.

For others, the need to exercise (a lot) is an equally strong need. Unless they’re testing themselves physically, they are only partially alive. I can’t say that need runs as strongly in me but I understand it.

All I need is the air that I breathe and to love you, I looked it up, it’s by The Hollies. It’s one of those songs from the seventies. It’s a bit cheesy but the songwriter is very clear about what’s important.

What’s the air that you breathe? What feeds your heart and soul?

Choose to make it a priority, whatever ‘it’ is

No one else needs to understand. If you don’t have this [fill in the blank], let’s call it “air”, your soul shrivels and shrinks. You become angry, neurotic, sick or tired, or all of those. You become peevish, cantankerous and judgmental. That’s not good for World Peace.

Whatever you love, do it. Make time for it. Indulge in a little of what you fancy. Put it in your diary before all else. If you’ve been without for a while, gorge on it a bit, then do it slow and steady daily. Neither starvation, nor gluttony, just a little often.

Permission slip for being yourself

Write yourself a permission slip to be yourself and do what you love. Write yourself a permission slip to prioritise it every day. A priority isn’t what you “say” is important to you. A priority is what you choose to do with your time and your life.

You know you want to

When I’m starved for the things I need, I start to get a little bit weird about them. I resent them. I don’t have time to write! It’s not fair that I need to write. It is so much easier to eat potato chips and watch junk TV. But that doesn’t work for me. It makes my thighs bigger and my soul crankier. I rebel and call writing “work”, but writing rights my world. Writing tells me who I am.

What makes you know yourself?

What makes you who you are?
